Weldon Utd - Reserves

Saturday 20th October, 2001 ........Weldon UFC vs Wilby Utd
Scorers -

Saturday 13th October, 2001 ........Weldon UFC 3 - 2 Stanion United
Scorers - Roger Doyle x 2 and Neil Johnson

Weldon Reserve's winning run continued with a convincing triumph over Stanion Reserves.

Weldon went 1-0 up after Roger (Dodge) Doyle pounced on a poor kick from Stanion's keeper and slotted home.  Weldon dominated the rest of the first half and the first 20 minutes of the second, when veteran defender Neil Johnson rose like a salmon and headed in a goal from a corner. Fellow veteran Jimmy (Junior) Collins still disputes the fact that the goal should've been his!

Stanion fought back with a goal, but 'Dodge' again showed his class by taking on half of the Stanion defence and after beating 3 defenders and wrong footing Stanion's goal keeper and slotting home again. Stanion pushed forward and got a consolation goal three minutes from the end, but the win was Weldon's!

Saturday 7th October, 2001 ........Weldon UFC 6 - 1 Weedon Res
Scorers - James Boath x 3, Roger Doyle, Chris Smith and Scott Corr

Another sound performance by Weldon Reserves saw a further well won 3 points.

Weedon Reserves took an early lead when keeper Les Mahon done a 'Grobbelar' and watched the ball trickle into the back of the net.  (a few quid was on that one we all thought)

Weldon then took Weedon apart with a display of flowing attacking football from all areas of the team.  James Boath started the rout by finishing from a measured through ball from midfield. Scott Corr then took it to 2-1 from a goal mouth scramble and captain Chris Smith made it 3-1 at half time.

Goals from Roger (Different Gravy) Doyle and 2 more from James Boath to get his first hat-trick from his 20 year career, made it a convincing victory.

Saturday 29th September, 2001 ........Kettering Nomads 3 - 1 Weldon UFC
Scorer - Patrick Hannigan

Weldon's best performance of the season so far saw a lot of effort for no reward as they went down 3-1 to Kettering Nomads.

Weldon fought and battled as hard as Nomads in the first half and were unlucky not to take the lead when Patrick (Hanny) Hannigan  missed the only decent chance in those 45 first minutes. Nomads took the lead early in the second half with a simple ball over the top and Weldon were unable to cope with it. Weldon's Patrick (Hanny) Hannigan equalised with a cheeky free kick.  With the Nomads keeper hiding behind his wall,  Hanny, using all his footballing guile and nous, passed the ball straight into the net.

Weldon tried to battle for a draw but fitness started to tell and Nomads nicked 2 goals in the last 10mins to take the three points.

Sat 22nd September, 2001 ........Weldon UFC 4 - 0 W'boro Grammarians
Scorer - Gary Poole x 2, David Thompson and Jim Darrah

Weldon's first clean sheet came from a solid defensive performance and quality finishing.

New boy Gary Poole produced 2 quality finishes in the first half as Weldon dominated and should've had more.

The second half saw a Grammarian comeback but Weldon's improving defence stood solid. A late goal by manager Jim Darrah, proving he's still got a clinical finish or 2 in him and a perfectly placed David (Thommo) Thompson penalty sealed a good win.
